Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas have regularly resounded in Berlin since 1947 through cantata-services; since the consecration of the new Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in 1961, the cycle has its home there and is entrusted to the Bach-Choir, founded in the same year. It has become an integral part of Berlin's musical scene through conductors Hanns-Martin Schneidt, Helmuth Rilling, Karl Hochreither, and Achim Zimmermann. The book's text approaches this tradition, nearly unique worldwide, from journalistic, musicological, theological, performance-practical, and architecture-critical perspectives. Numerous images and an extensive chronology of more than 1,200 performances to date impressively illustrate this section of Berlin's musical history.
